Village administrator - Zuzanna Paduch History in brief
For nearly seven centuries has the village of Grebow existed on the left bank of the lower Leg river. The name "Grebow" is ancient and was derived from the proto-Slavonic word "greba" meaning "a hill". Wood-distillers, wild bee-keepers, hunters and ore burners were first settlers to the land located at the heart of the wood. The evidence for this fact is found in names of villages: Sokol, Jamnica, Wydrza, Ruda. Polish kings were once frequent visitors to the land coming here to hunt or stay in the nearby town of Sandomierz. Because of the great population growth in the region a parish was established in Grebow in 1515. A considerable part of the community of Grebow and bordering villages was of foreign origin as captives from numerous wars and invasions settled here. The preserved till today surnames of local residents as Dul, Dec, Saja, Maciek, Dyl, give evidence to the fact as well as names of hamlets as Jamnica or Tatarowa Gora. The land witnessed many historic events, e.g. Tatar and Swedish raids, peasants' fights against Austrian troops. Historical records read that old-time residents of Grebow and its surroundings were men of honour but also of arrogance, people quick to drink and to fight. Today there are no great woods. The forest was grubbed out but the village has remained faithful to its name and its traditions. The present Grebow is a modern village, wealthy and still expanding. Grebow of today stretches for over 5 km along the east-west axis, 3 km from north to south as a typical village of the main-street type. It encompasses hamlets called: Wiry, Grodki, Niwa, Paledzie, Szlachecka, Kat. Because of the proximity of the Sulphur Mine offering employment to the local population since 1964 the professional structure changed. However, after its boom years the mine "Jeziorko " went bankrupt and agriculture and work in the private sector have once again become the main livelihood for the commune residents. Since 1975 Grebow has functioned as a commune centre. A central part can nowadays be distinguished within the whole body of the village. The part is an administrative, trade and social centre. The following are located at the Market Square: the school, the Commune Office, the Post Office, the Public Library, GS offices, PKS coach stop, slightly farther: the new nursery school, the Health Centre and the Vet's Surgery. The village has also got some service workshops, a police station and the Cooperative Bank. The whole commune area has been provided with the gas and watersupply, its own sewage treatment plant and a modern rubbish dumping ground. Works on building sewerage are going on. Despite the modernity prevailing in the present image of the village, it offers also objects providing evidence as to its stormy past. Visitors are recommended to see the Dolanskis' palace with the surrounding oldpark, both dating to the beginning of the 19th c. Another attraction is a mound commemorating a peasants' strike of 1937, a larch creche and a complex of religious objects dating from the beginning of the 20th c. The local cemetery holds grayes of great people of the land, e.g.: Wincenty Motas - a poet, Jan Gil - a leader of the peasants' movement, Janka "Fizylierka" Stadnik - lieutenant of the Polish Army, Jan Sokol - a writer, etc. Advantages ot the commune The main element of the system ensuring transport availability of the commune is the province road Tarnobrzeg - Stalowa Wola running through the centre of the commune and providing a direct access to Stale, Grebow, Jamnica and grounds of the former Sulphur Mine in Jeziorko. The north part of the commune is crossed by the railway line Rozwadow-Grebow-Tarnobrzeg-Sandomierz. Moreover, a railway siding connecting Olendry heat-generating plant and the Sulphur Mine in Jeziorko starts at the railway station Grebow.
